Elon Musk mocks one of his disabled employees who asked him if he was fired – Liberation

    Disability in everyday lifecase

The billionaire questioned the disability of one of his employees who had shouted at him on the social network, for lack of access to his professional computer for several days. Musk ended up clumsily apologizing.

Yet another episode in Elon Musk’s heartbreaking Twitter saga. The boss of the social network for almost six months has attacked online – therefore in plain sight – one of his employees, Haraldur Thorleifsson. Nicknamed “Halli”, he suffers from muscular dystrophy, forcing him to move around in a wheelchair. The man, very famous in the tech community in Iceland, created a start-up, Ueno, which he sold to Twitter in 2021, thus becoming an employee of the social network.

But Monday evening, “Halli” sought to know if he had been fired, “the access to [son] business computer [ayant] been cut” “nine days” previously. Before him, thousands of other employees have been fired without even being told since Musk took over the company in October 2022. “Halli” then politely challenged his boss on Twitter. “Dear Elon Musk […] Your human resources manager not being able to confirm whether I am still employed or not, […] maybe you will answer me here?”

The message, with several thousand shares, eventually reached the eyes of the boss himself. In response, he asked what work “Halli” did for the company, before the employee detailed his duties. This is where Elon Musk went spinning: “The truth is that this guy (who enjoys an independent fortune) does not work, pretends a handicap which would prevent him from typing, and yet tweets at all costs. I can’t say I have much respect for that.” In another tweet – since deleted -, the billionaire even allows himself to say that Halli was “the worst” of its employees.

The response from “Halli” was not long in coming. In a long series of messages, the man has detailed by the menu the effects of his illness to Elon Musk. His legs that left him first, then his arms, and finally his fingers, “for which you care a great deal”he says sarcastically.

“I am not able to do manual labor (which in this case means typing or using a mouse) […]. It was not a problem at Twitter since I was a senior director and my job was mainly to help the teams move forward, to give them strategic and tactical advice.he justifies himself.

Haraldur Thorleifsson then decided to hit the tycoon in the wallet, asking him if Twitter intended to pay him what was owed to him under the takeover of his start-up if he was really fired. The amount could be in the millions of dollars, reports the American press, and seems to have made Musk regret his peremptory tweets.

The billionaire ended up declaring on Tuesday evening to have “had a video call with Halli to find out what was true versus what we [lui] had told”. They are apologized to his employeeclaiming to have received false information “or, in some cases, true, but not meaningful.” Despite everything, “Halli” would consider staying at Twitter, according to Elon Musk. For his part, the possible ex-employee was content to announce the opening of his restaurant in the center of Reykjavik, “Anna Jóna”, named after his mother.
